Fun video about the Ashiatsu Portable Bars!

Made by Miss Dawn and I while setting up for the Germany Ashi class, here's an informational video on the portable bar system for Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy!

Ashi around the world

I'm back from my trip to Germany! It was great, and the new Ashiatsu therapists in Weisbaden are amazing! Trying to figure out how to explain the Ashi-bar construction using the metric system was the hardest part ;) Dawn (our super fantastic awesome host and assistant instructor who's an Advanced Ashi and Ashi-Thai trained graduate) arranged a fabulous training site for us on the Weisbaden Army base. Petra and Sabine are the dynamic Deutchland duo, graduates from the very first European Barefoot Basics class. Thanks Miss Dawn, Corey, KC, and all our amazing Weisbaden bodies that we massaged, y'all made it awesome! Here is our group, Petra, Sabine, Miss Dawn and myself in the Weisbaden Ashiatsu training room!:

This past weekend was the TAMT (Texas Association of Massage Therapists) 10th annual convention in Ft Worth, where I taught 2 intro to Ashiatsu classes, and demonstrated the work at a booth. We showed how versatile Ashi can be at an event - we worked through clothing using Ashi-Thai and the Ashi-Anma techniques, and worked directly on the skin with the moves we are best known for from our Barefoot Basics, Anterior/Sidelying and Advanced Ashi classes. Thanks to Jamie, Robyn, Adella, Susan and Cindy for all their help at the booth, Super thanks to all the "Purple Shirts" for everything, to Terry for his awesome history lessons, and to Shelli for a FANTASTIC time :D

Are you ready for ROCKtober?

Since the end of my busy summer schedule of workshops, I've been having fun massaging my clients in San Antonio. My favorite yearly massage tradition, "Zeptember" is coming to an end, but I won't let the good tunes stop, as soon as I am back to work on October 20th we'll celebrate "Rocktober" with even more rockin' tunes set to a massage vibe, and yes, I do take requests, so rack your brains for what you'd like to rock out to - and I'll see if I can find it's zen interpretation. The best part about Rocktober? HOT STONES MAKE A COME BACK! Yep, thats right, a seasonal treat just for you! Complimentary during your 90 minute or 2 hour Ashiatsu session, Rocktober through December.

Earlier this month I was in Houston for their American Massage Therapy Association Unit meeting, presenting Ashiatsu to 20 fun massage therapists. It was great to meet more therapists from this huge state, and see an active AMTA Unit in action. I shared a few of our famous barefoot massage strokes from our two introductory workshops, giving the therapists all a chance to feel what it's like to give and receive an Ashiatsu session. Two lucky gals won $100 off tuition to any class I offer in the next year, and with the help of my wonderful Ashiatsu assistant Hollie, we began planning a new training facility for the Houston area. More details to come, so please "stay tuned!"

Last week I hosted a Fijian Massage class, taught by a good friend of mine, Christyn Rittenhouse from Rockford Illinois. Her and I learned Fijian massage together in Seattle years ago from the founder of the modality, Lolita Knight. In support of another form of barefoot massage from it's original source I was so excited to bring this class to Texas and let Christyn, who is now Lolita's top Fijian Massage instructor, share her talents with us. She even stayed an extra day to teach us her new Asian Fusion Facial class, showcasing her expertise in the art of face massage stemming from her esthetics, massage and Qi Gong background. It was an amazing experience and was great to soak up the knowledge of another barefoot massage instructor and friend, thanks so much Christyn! To learn more about Fijian massage, visit the modalities home page, http://www.FijianMassage.com, or Christyn's site, http://www.BarefootMassage.org

So whats next? I'm getting ready to leave for Germany! Off to teach Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy in far off places and see the world! Once I get home, I bounce right up to Ft Worth, Texas, to teach at the TAMT Massage Convention, then it's back to massaging my clients at Heeling Sole for a few weeks before classes start up again. Man I love my job!

And from yesterday's Ashi-Thai class, here's my gals Sharon, Jennifer, Glory, Jamie, Shannon, Pam, Jen and Mary from Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Nebraska, and of course big 'ol Texas:

Wing Walker

After being an Ashiatsu therapist for 7 years, I gotta say, it's not like I know everything! Back when I learned "Barefoot Basics", the double footed strokes were mixed in there too. Three intense days of learning everything that is still in the beginners course, plus about half of what is in the "DF2" or "Advanced Ashiatsu" course. When I took the "Fusion" class, probably about three years later, I learned even more doubles and the flow that makes it all come together. How did I ever remember all that after taking each class only once!??! Yah, well, I didn't!

Would you ever take a class from someone who took a course only once, or even worse, learned it from just a DVD, and thought they are good enough to teach the same material to the masses? Uhh, NO! Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy's founder Ruthie prides herself on teaching her instructors in person, in detail and in depth so that we can bring the real stuff back to our classes.

As an instructor for AOBT, we first go through an intense 6 month apprenticeship program and learn Barefoot Basics and Anterior/Sidelying inside and out directly from Ruthie. I re-learned the basic strokes and figured out everything that goes on behind the scenes for each workshop. There was a black eye, lots of sweat and tears while I trained to be an instructor last year, but there's just as much fun, good times and great massage too!

When we are ready to teach a new level class, the instructors are required to re-train with Ruthie on that particular subject. So, I went out to Denver last week and immersed myself into all things Ashiatsu all over again to learn how to teach Advanced Ashiatsu course! We study, practice and re-hash every detail all night, and teach it to the class under her supervision all day. I was there for almost a week, and came back more in love with Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy than ever before. (As if that is possible!)

After showing Ruthie my foot work and watching me teach, she helped to perfect every possible thing you could think of so that I can pass that knowledge onto my students. How to explain what is happening, how to demonstrate it, how to modify it, how to make it fun, how to make it safe, ect. I brought back an oldie-but-a-goodie and taught Ruthie how to explain the "Cowbell" move as it was taught by my first Ashi Instructor Janette - Ruthie had forgotten all about that little gem! I was proud to see that I had pretty much maintained the correct body mechanics and application all these years for those tough strokes. (I just need to shrink the travelling distance that my big 'ol feet naturally want to take during the Butterflies!) You should have seen Ruthie pour her heart out while teaching, it's amazing. Ashiatsu really is her baby and it shows, she loves this work more than anything.

Anyways, I had a blast and am more proud to be a part of this awesome modality working with such an AMAZING team of instructors than ever before. We rock. I did learn a new stroke that wasn't in the book back in my day... or maybe I forgot it (There, I said it, I admit that I forgot a stroke!) the "Wing Walkers"! Thats a fun one.

Here's the class from Denver last week with Ruthie, Kina and I teaching. I learned more from y'all then you know!

All Thai'd up in San Antone

Not long after my Ashi-trip to Portland, classes started back up in San Antonio again! I had a wonderful one-on-one private 3 day workshop with Diana, teaching her Barefoot Basics with my sole attention on her... she's going to be a barefoot diva!

Just two days later the Ashi-Thai class started, completely full with experienced and talented Ashiatsu therapists - we had so much fun learning how to tie our clients up into pretzels!

So welcome the mid-June batch of Ashi therapists: Diana, Jacqueline, Alyssa, Laura, Hollie, Christina, Rhonda, Stacia & Ronnie!

July brings in another new group of 8 massage therapists who will learn Barefoot Basics, then I go to Denver to teach Advanced Ashiatsu with our founder Ruthie Hardee, then I'm headed right back home to offer the same Advanced Ashiatsu class FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN SAN ANTONIO!

I love Portland!

Well, better late than never... It's taking me a while to catch up to normal life since my trip to Portland!

Our class of 6 amazing massage therapists learned Ashi-Thai at the beginning of June in Portland - in the middle of a funny mix of weather. So here's a warm welcome into the realm of Ashi-Thai for Nancy, Cheryl, Akemi, Andrea, Darla, and Sarah! It was gorgeous and sunny while we were in class, then torrential downpours of rain afterwards...but still very pretty. During class we had the windows open listening to local bands play on the sidewalk and scooters zoom by, then by night we dodged the rain by running into yummy thai food restaurants!

I don't have the picture of the students yet - for once I wasn't taking pictures all day long, I was just enjoying every moment of that RAD town! I received a Chavutti Thirumal massage - of which I'll post about in detail as soon as I can! So in the meantime here is one picture I snapped from a building near where we were ;)

BTW: New Barefoot Basics & Anterior/Sidelying Ashiatsu class is added to my schedule~ it's in San Antonio in August!

Why Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy?

I was asked this weekend why I chose to only provide barefoot massage sessions in my own practice. Why did I choose to retire my hands completely? Why do I do only the styles of massage that people have never heard of?

The easy and selfish answer is that Ashiatsu is easier on my body - less wear and tear on my hands, wrists, shoulders, on up the line from my spine through my neck. I can easily do twice as many Ashiatsu sessions providing deep and relaxing bodywork in comparison to what my amazing hands and wicked accurate forearms could do (I'm not knockin' my original massage tools, they rock!) My upper extremities aren't the reason why I retired them - my feet just happen to be better. I don't get tired giving Ashi sessions, and the quality of the work stays consistent, so my last massage is just as good if not better than the first.

The ego-filled answer is that Ashiatsu is unique. I am awesome. Blend those together and you got an Awesome Ashi waiting for you to schedule. My Ashiatsu will melt your body and leave your entire being as a pile of dripping goo on the table. I am the only one in town, heck, in the state, with the advanced training, experience and expertise in Ashiatsu. I have blended every advanced training course that I have taken into my Ashi sessions - go look at my Continuing Education resume - I do all that and more with my feeties. My feet can feel everything that my hands can. No one can Ashi like I Ashi. The student's I've taught are darn good and are giving me a run for my money, but my feet know the barefoot voodoo and will put you in a trance.

But talent only goes so far. The real reason why I only massage with my feet is that it is the best massage that I've ever had, and the world needs to feel more massages like this.

I have received too many massages where I wonder when it will be over. I feel like they are either smearing lotion on me, diving aimlessly into my body with sharp thumbs and elbows, or I'm annoyed at why they are spending so much time in one spot. I VERY RARELY hit the zone-out stage during a massage session. I only tip them because I know they are being paid dirt. (The few who do give me massages that I love know who they are - I love you guys!!!!!!!) As a massage therapist it is hard to get beyond analyzing what, why and how someone is massaging you - (and sometimes why they are even bothering!) We are the ultimate critics. Receiving massage is not relaxing to me, it's more of a chore. That is, it was a chore until I received an Ashiatsu session for myself!

The first Ashiatsu I received was like bliss incarnated. From the second she started to 4 hours after she finished, I was completely gone. I could have died happily on that table. I was finally able to let go, I relaxed, and I could give a flying purple monkey about what she did next or why she was doing it. I think for the first time ever my brain shut off and the body followed. I floated out of that massage, I probably shouldn't have driven, and the benefits lasted in my body for weeks. She had even worked clinically with an injury treatment focus, and had addressed some "chronic tissue-issues" (as I call them) in my hips during that session. She wasn't even TRYING to melt me like butter, thats just what Ashiatsu does.

Here's why. The strokes are slow. So slow you forget they are moving and you completely doze off from in the midst of the perfect pressure hold. The strokes are long. No more of this wishy washy swirly wirly loop-de-loop lotion application - Ashiatsu strokes go from head to toe in single (or double if you get an Advanced trained therapist) full side of the body movements. There is not any annoying ever-distracting movement that prevents you from leaving your consciousness behind. The strokes aren't painful. Ashiatsu works the deepest layers of muscles and connective tissue without hurting because the deep pressure is diffused through the whole foot, and is applied to the whole affected area of your body, not just a tiny spot, and an Ashiatsu trained foot maintains your preferred level of consistent pressure. The massage isn't pointless. An Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy trained massage therapist - from the day they leave their first class - can address pain in the neck, back, shoulders, hips, joints - you name it! By working with the fascia and the entire length of all muscles addressed, Ashiatsu can work with complex tissue-issues creating a positive structural change in chronic soft tissue damage. This stuff is not just fluff, Ashiatsu tricks you and does more than you realize. Its worth its weight in gold. Yah, your massage therapist might be a body builder with gorilla sized forearms and hands who gives the "no pain no gain" massage week after week, but my Ashiatsu therapist is a petite 125 pound woman who peacefully works on me, works with me, and works with gravity to her advantage, and I only need one of these massages a month to get the same exact benefits done faster, lasts longer, and brings me to health more effectively by encouraging my body to heal itself. I'd gladly pay her weight for each session once a month, and ditch the cheap massages that were needed weekly. She'll be around longer anyways.

So, long story short, Ashiatsu rocks and I want you all to experience the best massage that I have ever felt.

Wanna learn it? I teach it. Check out the "workshops" tab on my site for the details. Wanna feel it? Schedule a massage online - click the blue foot at the bottom of any page on my site to book your appointment.

Appointment Scheduling

The quickest, easiest way to get on my massage table is to schedule an appointment online. Click on the "Book Now" button. If you call my cell or use the contact form from my website, we may end up playing phone tag since I am currently filled to the brim with massage appointments. I am trying my best to return all calls within 24 hours. You may also call my office at 210.967-4400 to schedule, reception hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-5:30. (But online is definitely the best, you'll get to see open appointment times and choose what you like.)

I ask that you arrive 10 minutes early to complete your health intake forms - otherwise it may cut into your massage session. If you'd like to complete the form at home and bring it with you, the PDF file is available here.

I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy - so be sure to alert me of any changes that need to be made to our appointment 1 day in advance.

Buyer Beware - not all Ashiatsu's are created equal

The Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy® family and its thousands of satisfied graduates would like to say thank you to the massage and spa industries for letting our company provide a wellness program that has changed so many therapists lives.

Our method of deep tissue barefoot massage using an over head support system has improved the quality of life for many that would have naturally left the massage industry had it not been for our educational curriculum.

The proven massage techniques and innovative teaching methodologies in which we developed to teach therapists how to be safe & proficient in a short amount of time is our greatest achievement. The art of allowing each therapist to build a relationship with our instructors prior to class as well as continued instructor support throughout the graduates career is the reason why we produce genially expert body-workers.

We are honored to be the first to have a nationally approved “barefoot-bar dedicated” course study of which others now try to imitate. Our research on compression massage and development of safe and efficient bar construction is unsurpassed. We are committed to being the best at providing quality educational seminars in the field of barefoot massage. The techniques have been developed with integrity and attention to detail. Our mission is to create a superb experience for every therapist who walks into our classrooms.

This world leading treatment “stands” above any other with a trusted reputation for being the original. Because we have made Barefoot Bar Therapy world famous, we must warn you of imitation knock-off educators trying to duplicate our famous footprints. Beware of any group who may use the founder’s or authorized instructor names, or similarly-sounded trade names to confuse the public into believing they are associated with our program. Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy (AOBT) and our courses are recognized by the NCBTMB, AMTA, ABMP as well as other state and massage liability insurances as an approved modality - so feel confident and safe knowing that the credits that you take with us and the Certification that you earn are real. Choose how you spend educational dollars wisely and don’t settle for less than the best.

We hope unsuspecting students will be on their toes when weighing out their options for continuing education. Unfortunately there are some who have studied with us, boldly repackage our material as their own and will happily confuse you to think they created our work. This in return prompts body-workers to contact us for clarification as they “sense” we are the pioneers just from one conversation. Be duly noted that if they are not currently listed as an instructor on our website, chances are they do not have honest innovation. Study from the source, train with the original, and learn it for real. You can view the list of approved AOBT instructors HERE.

We do however, have the greatest respect and admiration for those “barefoot massage entrepreneurs” who have honest innovation and documentation to prove their development of an original concept, and we happily endorse them.

We appreciate those who recognize hard earned respect and goodwill and we welcome those who work with therapists and companies with integrity.
