Getting to know your massage: Part 2

So now that you know WHAT Ashiatsu is, (check out Part 1 of this series of posts here!) the next part about getting to know your massage is all about how to receive a good massage. (Hint: it’s more than just laying there and taking it!) How to best receive a barefoot massage at Heeling […] http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The importance of recurring Ashiatsu appointments

One of the biggest requests we get from new clients is “do you offer a discount?” At Heeling Sole we encourage the fact that massage therapy is not a luxury. If you have chronic pain and high stress, one single massage will not do the trick – although it will definitely help with acute pain […] http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Socially Acceptable

I realize I'm not the worlds best blogger. I think it's my reading narcolepsy that's to blame. If I read a lot, I fall asleep. If I actually do take the time to sit down and write something, it'll be so long that you'll fall asleep. Naps are nice, but they are kind of inconvenient if it happens face first into your laptop in a Starbucks.

So while I'm busy ~not~ keeping this blog super bogged down with posts, you can follow me on Twitter and Facebook. Whether you are a client of Heeling Sole, a massage therapist interested in learning more about Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, or a graduate of one of my classes, I'll have a little bit of something for everyone here on the blog (occasionally) but more often it'll be on my social networks, in 140 characters or less.

Thanks for tuning in! OH, and don't forget that I redesigned the Heeling Sole website ... check it out!

Ashiatsu for Athletes

Last weekend I massaged at a cycling/sports expo on the finish line of the Hill Country 600 - a 375 mile qualifier for the Race Across America. The winner of that race, Marko Baloh, who finished on an injury but yet still in record time (19hrs. 14min. 23sec!!) received an Ashiatsu session from me and was pleasantly surprised at what Ashiatsu had to offer! I spent the whole day with some awesome people, especially my booth buddy Nydia! (Who you should all go take a yoga class with:http://www.nydiasyogatherapy.com/

Ashiatsu for Athletes
You can't count the benefits of sports massage on just one hand – boosts performance, breaks down scar tissue, prevents injuries and loss of mobility, reduces delayed onset muscle soreness, decreases anxiety, enhances microcirculation, improvement of tissue elasticity  but can you count it all on both feet?!? You can with Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, a style of barefoot massage which includes a dynamic range of additional benefits for the sporting life.
Ashi-what!? It’s pronounced “Ahhh-shiatsu”. “Ashi” means foot, and “-atsu” is pressure.  In this style of massage, the therapist uses gravitational forces and distributes their body weight by holding onto bars in the ceiling, using their feet to deliver the strokes, applying painless pressure directly onto your body. Ashiatsu is not just walking on your back; you will feel a deep, broad, flowing centrifugal pressure that engages the fascia throughout your whole body, loosening adhered tissue, opening tissue membranes, which allows fluids and nutrients to follow more thorough pathways. Additionally, compression of soft tissue is applied throughout the session, helping to release spasm, muscle contraction and tension, always working within your perfect range of pressure. It works fast, typically just 20 minutes of Ashiatsu accomplishes the physical benefits that occur in a 60-minute session of a more traditional style of bodywork.
Ashiatsu effectiveness comes from treating all layers of your tissue and your entire body as a whole, resulting in a calmed fight-or-flight response and a dramatic dilation of blood vessels. By massaging you with the larger surface area of a foot – in comparison to a hand or forearm – and by accessing the deeper layers of your tissue without the sensation of pokey pain that triggers muscle guarding, the rate of post-event recovery is faster. The depth is more consistent throughout the entire length of the muscle, curbing pain responses and flooding the body with new sensory information to help it evaluate itself and begin to heal.
To encourage pre or post-workout low intensity exercise, passive stretches are incorporated to improve your tissue elasticity and reduce spasms. Ashi-Thai – another form of barefoot massage developed from Ashiatsu and Thai massage – offers a unique chance to rest, relax and recuperate from strenuous activities while the therapist maneuvers your limbs and body into deep stretches that you may not be able to achieve on your own. If you need your Psoas stretched, IT Band unbound, Soleus/Gastroc’s drained and your spine decompressed, this massage will do it all. The benefits of Ashiatsu combined with the passive stretching techniques that are included in Ashi-Thai offer a well-rounded holistic approach to aid in improving your performance and maintaining overall health.

Are you ready for ROCKtober?

Since the end of my busy summer schedule of workshops, I've been having fun massaging my clients in San Antonio. My favorite yearly massage tradition, "Zeptember" is coming to an end, but I won't let the good tunes stop, as soon as I am back to work on October 20th we'll celebrate "Rocktober" with even more rockin' tunes set to a massage vibe, and yes, I do take requests, so rack your brains for what you'd like to rock out to - and I'll see if I can find it's zen interpretation. The best part about Rocktober? HOT STONES MAKE A COME BACK! Yep, thats right, a seasonal treat just for you! Complimentary during your 90 minute or 2 hour Ashiatsu session, Rocktober through December.

Earlier this month I was in Houston for their American Massage Therapy Association Unit meeting, presenting Ashiatsu to 20 fun massage therapists. It was great to meet more therapists from this huge state, and see an active AMTA Unit in action. I shared a few of our famous barefoot massage strokes from our two introductory workshops, giving the therapists all a chance to feel what it's like to give and receive an Ashiatsu session. Two lucky gals won $100 off tuition to any class I offer in the next year, and with the help of my wonderful Ashiatsu assistant Hollie, we began planning a new training facility for the Houston area. More details to come, so please "stay tuned!"

Last week I hosted a Fijian Massage class, taught by a good friend of mine, Christyn Rittenhouse from Rockford Illinois. Her and I learned Fijian massage together in Seattle years ago from the founder of the modality, Lolita Knight. In support of another form of barefoot massage from it's original source I was so excited to bring this class to Texas and let Christyn, who is now Lolita's top Fijian Massage instructor, share her talents with us. She even stayed an extra day to teach us her new Asian Fusion Facial class, showcasing her expertise in the art of face massage stemming from her esthetics, massage and Qi Gong background. It was an amazing experience and was great to soak up the knowledge of another barefoot massage instructor and friend, thanks so much Christyn! To learn more about Fijian massage, visit the modalities home page, http://www.FijianMassage.com, or Christyn's site, http://www.BarefootMassage.org

So whats next? I'm getting ready to leave for Germany! Off to teach Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy in far off places and see the world! Once I get home, I bounce right up to Ft Worth, Texas, to teach at the TAMT Massage Convention, then it's back to massaging my clients at Heeling Sole for a few weeks before classes start up again. Man I love my job!

Need help?

You all know I offer Ashi tutoring services, right? Well I do! If you want help remembering strokes you've learned on class, or if you want help with your body mechanics, or just some more feedback on your application, I'm here for you!

We can go over what you know and tweak your body mechanics, perfect the strokes, and get more feedback on how to continue improving your Ashi massage. Just like in class, I'll provide guest clients, and you can work on me, I'll work on you, and you'll receive great personalized information and break through the wall you're stuck at. I can also show you how to prepare for Advanced Ashiatsu and make sure that you meet the prerequisites. (You might get a few "Jeni-ism's" out of this!)

The cost is normally $80/hour, but I'm gonna knock it back to $30/hour because I like y'all. PLUS since I am a CE provider for Texas, I can offer you 1 CE credit for each hour we work - applicable to your Texas license renewal requirements!

    National Massage Therapy Awareness Week!

This weeked starts the Americal Massage Therapy Association's (AMTA) National Massage Therapy Awareness Week! Every year around October 25-31st its time to remind yourself to get back into the habit of taking care of your body with regularly scheduled massages.

Are you aware of what your body is telling you? Sometimes we are so busy in life that we have learned to tune out our own natural intuition, and we shut down the voices saying "Hey! I'm overworked! I need a massage!"

Not ~all~ the voices in your head are crazy, but the voices in your body are usually right! So listen to them and come in this week.

A barefoot massage will help you turn up the volume on your body's awareness channel, you'll start to see the warning signs for when that evil knot that lives in your shoulder is about to attack.

Let massage help you become more aware now, and you're body will thank you forever!
